Become a Better Speaker

Become a Better Speaker

By Gary J. Bergenske

I recently read a book.  The author gave many good ideas on becoming a better speaker and I would like to share them with our committee.  Part of being a better leader and presenter is continued education.

  1. Leadership is the ability to teach people and organizations to

       surpass themselves.

  1. Most of the time, stuff doesn’t just happen to us – we make it happen by what we do and the way we are.
  2. Our goal as presenters ought to be unconscious competence – or to be operating in automatic mode.
  3. Presentation Mastery results in a disciplined user of advanced processes and techniques that are effective virtually 100 percent of the time.
  4. A good presentation leverages our most likeable personality traits with our polished skills to invigorate the content of our message.
  5. Never, Never use bad language.  It degrades you, your presentation and your message.
  6. The more you know about people, the better your presentation will be.
  7. Remember the success of your presentation is not primarily determined by you.  It is primarily decided by the person or persons who constitute  your audience.
  8. Master Presenters learn the composition of their audience before the presentation begins, then prepare accordingly.
  9. By  turning the unknown quantities into known quantities, we can overcome the anxieties and uncertainties that undermine any presentation.
  10. Practice your presentation at every opportunity.  Give yourself confidence that you can carry into your presentation.
  11. Your presentation arsenal should generally contain four kinds of ammunition;  Mental, hard copy, electronic, and material.
  12. The masterful presenter is quick without hurrying because he knows what is stored in his presentation arsenal and knows where to find it.
  13. The clothes you wear can help communicate your message.
  14. Most audiences spend the first three minutes of the presentation sizing up the presenter.
  15. Presentation Mastery is not about being perfect, it’s about achieving your objectives.
  16. You must have an awareness at all times, using your sensory acuity, of how your audience is responding to what you have to say.
  17. The more prepared you are going into your presentation, the better positioned you will be to react spontaneously to your audience in a way that keeps getting your message across.
  18. If all our preparations lead to a rigid and seemingly scripted presentation, we will not have maximized our opportunity for success.
  19. Our focus must always be on the audience, not ever only on our agenda.
  20. You can have all the right ideas, all the best intentions, and all the talent in the world, but if you don’t know how to present yourself and your ideas you will be selling you ambitions short.
  21. If you know what the audience is thinking, ask them.
  22. Delivering good presentations requires more skill than talent.
  23. Generalizations and other loaded phrases can work against your message.
  24. Masterful presenters have the wherewithal to respond to their audience or to their own internal gyroscope by adjusting their presentation style to keep the audience focused on their presentation.

What distinguishes winners is the will to prepare to win.
